The Auction

The Auction at United Flower Growers employs state-of-the-art computers to facilitate its sales process. Large digital Auction "clocks" and reader boards indicate the starting price and sales information for each item offered for sale.

The Auction process starts in the early morning when truckloads of fresh flowers and plants produced by our local growers arrive at UFG's 26 loading bays. All floral products are visually inspected for quality before being placed in the wagon queue. Once accepted, pertinent sales data is sent to the main office where it is entered into the Auction's custom-designed, computer system. This information is later displayed for Auction customers on digital reader boards as products proceed through the sales gallery.

State-of-the-art, custom-designed software ensures that the Auction process runs smoothly and efficiently, from start to finish.

The Auction starts promptly at 6:00 a.m., as wagons are towed into the sales gallery. Over the course of a year, more than 80,000 wagons move through the gallery carrying an incredible number of flowers and plants. In 1999, for instance, more than 11 million stems
of standard roses were offered for sale.

As the auction progresses, customers make purchases by using computerized keypads located on every desk. This sales method allows transactions to occur at amazing speed. In fact, we can transact over 4,000 individual purchases, initiated by hundreds of customers, every hour. This version of e-commerce, influenced by the effects of true supply and demand, determine what price customers will pay for any given item. There is no faster nor efficient method of selling thousands of items to hundreds of customers.
